Training Videos

The Tulsa Police Driver Training Video was compiled in 2002 through several hours of filming at the Tulsa Police Driving Facility.  The original intent of the film was for the use in powerpoint presentations. Due to the entertainment value of the final product, it is also used by the Recruiting Officer.  Real One Player must be used to play this file.  11 mb

This collision avoidance exercise stresses the correct usage of anti-lock brakes and the powerful effect of weight transfer on a vehicle.  175 kb

The Evasive Simulator combines an accident avoidance exercise along with quick decision making skills.  As the student approaches, a sign is dropped indicating which lane to drive in.  See this exercise from the outside of the vehicle. 198 kb

This Serpentine Exercise is conducted at 60 mph and teaches steering concepts and control of the vehicle during weight transfer.  See this exercise from the outside of the vehicle.  See what happens when oversteer occurs during this exercise.

This shuffle steering exercise is conducted at 45 mph.  It shows the officer the importance of vehicle control at high speeds.  167 kb

This Challenge Course combines several law enforcement driving techniques including straight line braking, shuffle steering and utilizing the apex of a curve.  Here is the same exercise from the inside of the vehicle.   527 kb

The Lateral Displacement Maneuver simulates an object in front of the officer.  The student is taught to avoid the potential collision.  This advanced exercise permits the officer to displace their vehicle up to 60 feet.  168 kb

The Cloverleaf Exercise is a shuffle steering maneuver that stresses proper steering, proper acceleration, and maintaining control of the vehicle during violent weight transfer.  See this exercise from inside the vehicle487 kb

Precision Driving is the key to a successful driver training program.  The Turnaround Maneuver is conducted to help the student with vehicle placement and precision techniques.  832 kb

Law Enforcement Officers often will drive on several different road surfaces during their shift.  It is important to expose officers to these different environments in training.  Vehicles will handle much differently depending on the surface they are on.  This is an off-road course featuring dirt and mud.  See this exercise from the inside.  See another inside angle.

This is another important shuffle steering exercise conducted on a wet, slick surface.  This exercise helps the officer avoid any loss of traction that can cause disastrous consequences while on patrol  304 kb

The evasive maneuver is one of the most important exercises in law enforcement driving.  With the average officer involved in a collision every 24,000 miles, this maneuver simulates an object in front of the officer.  The student is taught to avoid the potential collision.   392 kb

Learning to recognize the apex of a curve is essential in law enforcement driving.  This exercise is conducted early at slow speeds to assist the student with apex driving.  328 kb

 

The Tactical Vehicle Intervention Technique has become a very effective method in stopping vehicle pursuits.  Some form of this maneuver has been done for over 20 years.  As training has evolved, so has this maneuver.  Police Departments across the Country have found this to be very effective.  471 kb

The Tactical Vehicle Intervention Method is also known as the Pursuit Intervention Technique.  Depending on your geographic area, this may be referred to as simply PIT or TVI.  This video was conducted at night.  264 kb

Law Enforcement Driver Training is important at every level of a police agency.  Although it may not be necessary to train police detectives in emergency driving, precision techniques can be used by everyone that drives a vehicle.  583 kb

This is another form of shuffle steering utilizing a truck.  It is important to provide training to those officers driving non-traditional vehicles.  The size and weight of a vehicle will determine the way that it should be handled.  231 kb

Backing a vehicle is one of the most dangerous behaviors a driver can do.  Approximately one-third of all law enforcement collisions occur while backing up.  A proper Law Enforcement Driving Practice is to only back if it is absolutely necessary.  The Backing Maneuver is conducted to show the officer how difficult and obstructed backing can be  1.26 mb

Shuffle Steering is the key to safe driving.  With both hands on the wheel at a 9 & 3 position, the student is taught the concept of shuffle steering.  This method is particularly important in a high speed situation and keeps an officer from over-steering the vehicle.  744 kb

The Lollipop Exercise combines shuffle steering with acceleration control.  The student becomes aare of the importance of weight transfer while performing this maneuver.  See this exercise from the inside237 kb

The Precision Serpentine Maneuver combines shuffle steering with backing and acceleration control.  1 mb

Tire Deflation Devices are a must in combating the dangers of police pursuits.  It is important to teach officers how to properly utilize these devices.  If used inappropriately, they can be dangerous.  This video is a student practicing the deployment of Stop Sticks.  120 kb

Law Enforcement Driver Training can be used to show an officer what they should not do in a vehicle.  It is much safer to make a mistake in a training environment than on the streets.  In this video, an officer is driving too fast for the conditions.  This officer no doubt will have a keen awareness of the behavior that placed them in this potentially dangerous situation.  199 kb
