Claims police lack driver training

Tasmania's Opposition has accused the State's police force of running an inadequate training program for its drivers.

The Liberals have seized on figures showing an increase in the number of officers caught speeding and accidents involving police cars.

Today's Budget Eestimates hearings were told that over the past financial year, 42 insurance claims were lodged for Tasmania Police cars, with 3 cars written off.

The total of 60 traffic infrindgement notices were issued to police officers, an increase on the previous financial year.

The Opposition's Police spokesman, Rene Hidding, questions whether it was because of a substandard training program, a claim rejected by the Police Commissioner Richard McCreadie.

Commissioner McCreadie said driver training programs had not been cut, but conceded officers were only sent for a refresher course if they had been irresponsible drivers.
