The Police Driving Site is Dedicated to Providing
Complete Information as it Pertains to Issues Surrounding the Police Package Crown Victoria.
Ford has approximately 80% of the law enforcement police
vehicle market. Estimates are that there are about 400,000 of these police
cruisers currently are in use. First manufactured in 1979, today's Crown
Victoria has essentially the same design as the original vehicle, making it the
oldest design of a car still being sold as new. It is the only car on the
market that is certified for "police pursuit" that has retained the rear
fuel tank design.
At least 15 law enforcement officers have been killed and 9
seriously injured when the fuel tanks on their Ford Crown Victoria Police
Interceptors (CVPIs) exploded in flames after the vehicles were hit from behind
at highway speeds. There have been many more instances where the cars
exploded and were not occupied by officers. In addition to the officers'
deaths, at least 12 civilian deaths and 6 injuries have been linked to the Crown
Victoria and mechanically similar models. Ford has admitted in a
deposition that fuel-fed fires in this line of sedans already have claimed
more lives than the Ford Pinto when it was recalled in the mid-1970s.

The fact remains that the Police Package Crown Victoria will
continue to be the most popular patrol vehicle in America. It's size,
comfort, and solid mechanics are just some of the appeal to law enforcement.
Simply put, there is not a comparable vehicle. Despite this, Ford
Motor Company owes America's Law Enforcement Officers every resource it has to
correct this issue. Below are various articles and links to the Crown Vic
fuel tank situation. There are two arguments to the issue. Police
Driving has made it a point to tell this story from both angles. You will
notice articles from each side.
Statistics developed by Ford revealed
that Crown Victoria Police Interceptors have a rate of fatal collision fuel fed
fires far higher than other vehicles.
