I was contacted by a Fresno EVOC Instructor following a
PIT Article Article Posted on the Police Driving Site. I believe what
he had to say confirms what my article attempted to represent. When done
correctly, the Pursuit Intervention Technique can be a very valuable tool in
combatting police pursuits. Thank you Larry for the below comments:
| We started PIT (using the acronym for Pursuit Immobilization Technique) training in September 2003 and have trained over 90% of our patrol officers (over 400 cops). Each officer performs PIT no less than 10 times during the training, depending on their abilities. We stress finesse and allow them to perform it as many times as it takes to try to perfect it. We have estimated PIT has been done in practice on our cars over 4,000 times. No injuries nor major damage, including broken windows, has occurred. The cars have never rolled nor crashed into each other. We're hoping to eventually convince staff to approve its use in more "failure to yield" situations, including slow speed pursuits of DUIs. |
